Computer Magazines
I had a little fun this week trying out various flavors of Linux. I was browsing the local bookstore’s magazine rack, and while looking through my usual suspects, MacWorld, Linux Format, Linux Pro Magazine, iCreate, Computer Music, Layers Magazine, etc., I did something that I do every few months or so just for fun. I picked up various issues with Linux DVDs or CDs included.
Linux Live CD / Live DVD
The magazines usually include a Live CD or a Live DVD, which allow you to try Linux without committing to installing it on your hard drive. This is great for seeing if Linux is for you. It’s a great way to see if your hardware can support the flavor of Linux that you’re considering.
Google gOS 3.1 Gadgets
This week, I picked up Linux Pro Magazine’s “Special 04” edition. This edition lets you try out many of Google’s apps for working online and exploring other technologies like Google Gears (which allows you to work with your online documents offline).
The CD booted flawlessly on my 4-year-old Sony Vaio laptop. I have tried several of these CDs and DVDs in this computer, and I don’t recall having any trouble.
I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the various Google apps. Along with the Google apps, OpenOffice and some games were included. Overall, this is a great way to see if might be your next operating system of choice.
Unfortunately, while running on the CD, you have to wait for programs to load. Although a little annoying, it is totally worth it to try various Linux flavors, if only to keep up with the latest in the Linux world. Who knows? You might just commit to installing one on your hard drive. The Live CDs usually include a link to do just that.
So why not take a trip to the bookstore or newsstand and pick up a few flavors of Linux along with your favorite flavor of ice cream, and make an evening of exploring the latest Linux. Your TV won’t miss you a bit!
